Motor Truck Cargo insurance covers the value of your freight or load. It protects you from liability for cargo accidentally lost or damaged due to collisions, fires, etc. It can also cover clean-up expenses (if your load is dumped on a road or waterway), legal expenses, and additional losses your customer may incur as a result of not getting their cargo delivered.
Who is Motor Truck Cargo Insurance for?
Motor Truck Cargo is available to for-hire trucking operators / carriers transporting goods on behalf of clients using tractors, most trailers, box trucks, cargo vans, dually pick-ups, flatbeds and car haulers, as well as dump trucks and cement mixers. Other types of transport, such as passenger vans and buses are not covered, nor are shipping containers (for shipping containers, please see Cargo Insurance).
Have a high-value load that exceeds your policy limits? With per-load trucking insurance, you can purchase an individual policy that covers the gap for just that load.
Example: you’re contracted to transport a load valued at $1M, but your policy limits cover you only up to $800K, so you purchase a one-time policy of $200K so your total coverage equals the full value of the load.
Commercial Auto Liability or Truck Liability Insurance protects you from liability for damages caused to others and their property. This includes both Bodily Injury Liability and Property Damage coverages. If you transport certain HAZMAT/Dangerous Goods or meet other various criteria, your minimum coverage amount required may be higher.
This covers you for accidental damage to your truck (your rig and trailer), whether or not the accident involved another vehicle.
Trailer Interchange Insurance covers accidental damages to trailers, due to collisions, theft, vandalism, etc., that are in your possession but you do not own. This insurance is frequently required under a trailer interchange agreement. Trailers that you own are normally covered by your Physical Damage policy.
Inland Marine Insurance covers property, while in-transit over land, from accidental damage, fire, theft, etc. It’s used to protect property in your possession (regardless of owner), such as tools, specialty equipment, computers, photography equipment, trade show booths, etc., during transport, loading/unloading, warehousing, and/or while it’s temporarily left on location.
Professional Liability Insurance / Errors and Omission (E&O) insurance protects you from claims of negligence. Example: a client suffers a significant loss requiring compensation because a time-sensitive shipment is unintentionally delivered late or mishandled.
Warehouse Legal Liability Insurance limits your liability for your customers’ goods due to fire, forklift breakage, etc. Warehouse Legal Liability Insurance is essential coverage if you operate a warehouse on behalf of customers, because you may have little way of knowing the actual value of the merchandise in your care.
Custodian Bonds are required for Truckers, Freight Brokers, Warehouse Operators, etc., to transport goods from one Customs secured warehouse to another.
